CAST-IRON RADIATOR · 2021 · Best in Design 2021 · Grand Prize
Edudant
Edudant is a cast-iron radiator for period flats and villas built in the first half of the twentieth century. Its section proportions and evenly spaced ribs retain the character of traditional radiators. The cast surfaces are smooth and unornamented.

The shape of a section
The outer faces of the ribs follow a common curve based on a superellipse in longitudinal section. From across the room, the radiator reads as a single volume. Between the ribs, the surface curves towards the opening that carries water into the next section. Both surfaces meet in a single casting.

One detail, four mirrors
The clay model shows the junction between a vertical rib and the horizontal water passage. Four mirrors repeat a single model in a row, revealing the spacing between ribs. A comparison of CAD variants informed the final refinement of the junction in clay.

Dimensions and connections
Each section is 60 mm wide and 120 mm deep, with a water capacity of 0.8 litres. The overall height is 580 mm, with standard 500 mm pipe centres. Side and bottom connections accommodate different pipe layouts in existing buildings.
